The Waiting Room

273 Long Street

8001 Cape Town

Lo-ghost / Floors / Tzara / The Waiting Room

Full magic, multiplied by three. R50 gets you in. Doors open at 8pm. Everyone is welcome. ___ Lo-ghost: Dual-fronted alt-pop band from Cape Town, Lo-ghost, will make you dance and they’ll probably make you cry, sometimes at the same time. Comprised of Shannon Devy and Evan Strauss, Lo-ghost’s sonic scape is a synth-washed, feels-riddled, deep beat frenzy built around two enormous vocal performances. Expect fiercely honest song writing wrapped in dark, sing-able synth-pop. Watch the video for 'Ghost in a Blood Machine': ___ Floorslive: Floors is a Cape Town based duo that play lush, mood-based electronica. Their rich, organic sound stems from the use of vintage synthesisers and guitars, soulful vocals and a detailed production style. Their musical style is influenced by a range of different genres including contemporary-classical, jazz, alternative and downtempo electronica, ambient and folk. Watch the video for 'Little Room': ___ Tzara: "Tzara is South Africa’s Grimes. She has a distinct voice that blends into her productions as if it were another instrument. Unafraid to experiment with her music, the risks taken are bold and exciting. She is making music we are just not hearing from her counterparts on the scene, and it’s time more people pay attention." - Texx and the City Have a listen to Tzara's soundcloud: ___

Song pairing soirées: francophone Africa

Have you ever wondered what dish would best complement some of the world's most loved music, more specifically French music – from francophone Africa? Why would a peanut, a ground nut, be paired with Tiken Jah Fakoly’s song “Dernier appel”? How would the typical Malian recipe "Akara” echo the themes elaborated in Amadou & Mariam’s love song “Je pense à toi”? In what way does a rooibos infused crème brûlée (with red coloured burnt sugar!) resonate with Philomène’s new song “Un silence de plomb”?” Singer-songwriter Willemien/Philomène & seasoned South African chef Renette Vosloo will interpret these kinds of questions during their SONG PAIRING SOIRÉES/SAVEURS CHANSONS EVENT SERIES stretching from August-November 2017. The two guest artists joining Willemien/Philomène on 27 September & 18 October are vocalist & guitarist ADELLE NQETO and percussionist JAMES ROBB. Expect a multisensory experience dinner! Fighting online piracy with bitcoin technology

So when last did you download the latest blockbuster from a dubious online site even before its official release? Or forwarded that ebook to a friend? A South African-based tech startup, CustosTech, has found an innovative way of curbing the illegal distribution of copyrighted content using bitcoin technology. Join us for this high-tech Science Café Stellenbosch talk by Dr Gert-Jan van Rooyen, co-founder and director of CustosTech. He will provide a glimpse into this new world of cryptocurrencies and bounty hunters and how he transformed from an academic to become the director of his own company. More about Dr Van Rooyen and CustosTech: CustosTech was born out of the MIH Medialab at Stellenbosch University. The founders, Herman Engelbrecht, Gert-Jan van Rooyen and Fredrick Lutz, always had a passion for bitcoin technology, but became more interested in its applications beyond fintech. They developed an imperceptible watermarking technology which uses the Bitcoin blockchain to protect digital media files from online piracy. This already works for ebooks and movies, and will soon include music and virtual reality content. Science Café Stellenbosch is an initiative of the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University to promote the discussion of science issues. Entrance is free but come early to grab a good seat.
